(Feb. 10, 2012) For the fifth Friday Phone Briefing of the 2012 Legislative session, Jocelyn McCabe, AWB's vice president of communications, are joined by members of AWB's government affairs staff who review this week in Olympia. Kris Tefft, AWB general counsel and government affairs director, reviews attempts to change last year's landmark workers' compensation legislation. Also, Tefft discuses workplace bullying and other human resource legislation that could have a big impact on employers. Amber Carter, AWB government affairs director, gives updates on the state budget, including proposed taxes and fees that would be used to close the roughly $1.5 billion deficit. Carter also discusses various tax policy legislation including the governor's tax simplification legislation. Finally, Carter discusses transportation issues, including increases in licensing fees. Donna Steward, AWB government affairs director, discusses the failure of several needed education reform bills to pass out of committee. Steward also discusses the progress of an AWB-backed health care bill that will allow businesses and individuals to purchase health care insurance across state lines. Gary Chandler, AWB vice president of government affairs, discusses growing frustration among legislators over the state budget and the status of other key legislation. (Jan. 27, 2012) For the third Friday Phone Briefing of the 2012 legislative session, Jocelyn McCabe, AWB vice president of Communications, is joined by Gary Chandler, AWB vice president of Government Affairs, Kris Tefft, AWB general counsel and government affairs director, and Don Brunell, AWB president. Chandler discusses the lack of progress made by the legislature on a balanced budget. He also discusses the proposed transportation package. Tefft discusses proposed paid sick leave, workplace bullying and other employer-employee related legislation. Finally, Brunell joins us to discuss a new report released by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce comparing employment laws from all 50 states. It rates Washington "poor" due to a number of factors including numerous employer mandates and high workers compensation and unemployment insurance costs.
